The Plank

Plank illustration by Morris Masuda

The Norfolk and Norwich Sonic Arts Collective was established when a group of seven local artists and improvisers met over a shared passion for spontaneous collaboration and the desire to provide an accessible platform for any and all local musicians to perform.

We have created ‘The Plank’ to provide just this; NNSAC will host regular sessions where artists, musicians and audiences can meet to perform, to practice, to develop or to simply observe. ‘The Plank’ is entirely inclusive and open to non-musicians or those that are curious, we’d especially like to collaborate with artists of other forms (painting/movement/spoken word etc).

Drawings made by artist, Paul Levy. These images range from raw responses to music, to images created as musical contributions (using an amplified drawing board).

The Plank consists of mainly of group playing but with structural elements, initially facilitated by NNSAC and occasionally members of the group. The structural elements are curated by one or two people each session in the form of games, simple instructions, listening exercises, working with graphic scores etc.

The Plank is held at Martineau Memorial Hall, 21 Colegate, NR3 1BN on the FIRST and THIRD Tuesday of every month, from 7-9pm.

Plank sessions are informal; we expect no commitment from you but hope you’ll want to return.

Plank sessions are £2 (voluntary donation) to join to contribute toward cost. However, if you feel the cost may be a barrier to you joining the sessions then please just get in touch with us here.

Occasionally the group performs at Plink Plonk and on other stages under the name ‘Plankestra’. In December 2017 the Plankestra made their inaugural performance supporting Steve Noble:

And in August they supported the mighty Flower Corsano duo in Cambridge;:
